Typology of Hate Speech

Early Warning:

By far this has the least severity, but this shown not be neglected yet. This type of hate speech is also the most common out of the three categories. Such comments are an “early warning” to the hate on its development stage towards a group, and the individual has not taken drastic actions in defaming nor discriminating against them. Such vocabulary include “dumb”, “stupid” or “pointless”. As ITEMS has pointed out, the precursor to the "early warning" hate speech is often categorising oneself and us, and discrimination against another group through the usage of "them"

Dehumanization:

Dehumanization often compares its victims to inhuman human objects or animals that are less than human. It can be interpreted as personification but in a severely negative context. Such as "Pigs", "Retards" or "'Monkeys". Another type of dehumanization may take in a form of demonization, where an individual is shone in a bad light intentionally as to portray its victim in a both evil and threatening setting. Such terms include: "Corrupt", "Sinful" or "Extremist". The intention behind dehumanization and demonization is somewhat mixed; however, it is often used to turn a particular group collectively against a minority group.

Violence Threats:

This is the most extreme case of hate speech border lining "hate-crime" -- and it may often result in an armed confrontation. Unlike dehumanization, this type of hate speech often calls out certain groups and promotes the usage of violence in the suppression of the suppressed. By portraying violence against the victim group as "normal", oftentimes lead to the "normalization" of violence committed in other minds. This is a huge factor in encouraging the support of hate crimes targeted towards gendered people on a global scale.
